What having everything under control really means

Almost every company claims to have its processes under control. Then an audit comes, or a return, or a line stoppage, and the question becomes more uncomfortable: who touched this part, when, and with what outcome? If the answer requires a phone call, an Excel file and half a day of reconstruction, there was no control.
Control is not surveillance
The control we are talking about is not about people: it is about objects, processes and events. It means that every relevant asset — a garment, a piece of PPE, a machine, a pallet, a streetlight — has a digital identity, and that every event concerning it is recorded the moment it happens, not after the fact.
That is a substantial difference. Data reconstructed later is a reconstruction: it depends on the memory, good faith and availability of whoever provides it. Data collected on the spot, at the moment, by a device reading a unique identifier, is a fact.
The four layers
In practice, control is built in layers, and each layer enables the next.
- Identification — the object can be distinguished from all others, even identical ones.
- Serialization — that identifier maps to a record, with master data, history and documents.
- Tracking — movements and events accumulate on that record over time.
- Security — the identifier cannot be cloned, the record cannot be altered, access is governed.
Skipping a layer is the most common cause of projects that produce no value. A tracking system built on duplicable identifiers produces data nobody will use to make a decision, because nobody trusts it.
Where it usually breaks
The breaking point is rarely the technology. It is the last metre: the moment when an operator, wearing gloves, in a cold warehouse, has to record something. If that gesture takes more than a few seconds, or requires a dedicated device they do not have with them, it will not be done. It will be done later, from memory, or not at all.
That is why the choice of technology is not neutral with respect to the process. An NFC tag read with the smartphone the operator already has in their pocket has a different adoption rate from a UHF reader that has to be fetched from the trolley. Not because one is better, but because they answer two different questions: the first serves to check a specific object, the second to check a set of objects in transit.
What to ask before buying anything
Before evaluating tags, readers or platforms, three questions:
- What decision do I want to make with the data I collect? If there is no decision downstream, the data is a cost.
- Who performs the gesture of collection, and in what physical conditions?
- What happens if the data is missing, or wrong? The answer tells you how robust the security layer needs to be.
