NFC, RFID or BLE? The choice depends on the gesture of the person reading

Three gestures

NFC, UHF RFID and BLE are not alternatives: they answer three different gestures.

Exteryo Report Editorial Team

A matrix to work out which one each reading point needs.

The short answer

Each technology responds to a different gesture:

  • NFCwhen bringing the phone close to a specific object
  • RFID UHFwhen objects pass through a gate and you want to know what they are, without touching them
  • BLEwhen you want to know where an object is, without it passing through anywhere

The short answer

A real supply chain goes through multiple gestures, and the right answer is often more than one technology in the same project.

Why it is not simple

The question almost always arrives in the same form: is NFC or RFID better?

It is wrong.

Why it is not simple

It assumes that there is an absolutely better technology. There is not. There is a technology that corresponds to the gesture that people will actually make.

Chapter 1 of 4

What gesture does the person reading the tag make?

Three gestures

Each technology corresponds to a gesture: bringing close, passing through, locating.

NFC

NFC (13.56 MHz) reads on contact or at a few centimetres, one object at a time, with the smartphone the operator already has in their pocket. The gesture is: I bring the phone close to this specific object because I want to know something about it.

NFC

It is used for inspecting PPE, verifying the authenticity of a garment, or accessing a machine's documentation.

RFID UHF

RFID UHF reads at a distance, up to several metres, hundreds of tags simultaneously.

RFID UHF

The gesture is: these objects are passing through here and I want to know what they are, without touching them.

RFID UHF

It is used for gates, tunnels, warehouse inventories and shipping control.

Note

RFID UHF requires readers and antennas, either fixed or handheld, and a radio design of the reading point that is not trivial: metals and liquids absorb and reflect.

BLE

The gesture is: I want to know where this object is right now, without it passing through anywhere.

BLE

It is used for real-time location, temperature or impact monitoring, and high-value assets moving across large areas. The battery life is measured in years, not decades.

Chapter 2 of 4

Which row of the matrix decides the choice?

The matrix

Five rows compare the three technologies, but only one almost always decides.

Before moving on

Which of the five rows almost always decides the choice?

The reader

The row that almost always decides is the reader.

  • NFCsmartphone
  • RFID UHFdedicated
  • BLEsmartphone or gateway

The matrix

If the project requires dedicated hardware in the hands of the operator, the adoption cost grows much more than the cost of the tags, and with it the probability that the system will be bypassed.

Note

The cost per tag is low for NFC and RFID UHF, medium-high for BLE, which carries a battery on board.

Chapter 3 of 4

Why is the answer often more than one?

Three reading points

A real supply chain goes through different gestures.

Three reading points

The garment is serialised in production with a textile tag, read massively in UHF at the warehouse gate, and verified in NFC by the end customer in the boutique.

Tap the textile tag

One tag or two?

One tag or two?

One tagdual-frequency, read in both UHF and NFC.
Two tagsdistinct, on the same object.

Three reading points

These are not three projects: it is one project with three reading points.

The incentive

A single-technology supplier tends to propose the technology they sell: it is a structural reason. A B2B multicommerce that stocks NFC, UHF and BLE does not have the same incentive.

The incentive

«For that reading point the answer is: none of the three, a printed code is needed.»

Note

Exteryo is a B2B multicommerce with NFC, UHF and BLE in its catalogue: this incentive also applies to the writer.

Chapter 4 of 4

What test should be done before signing the order?

The test

The decisive test is done at the exact point where the tags will be read, with the real object and with real people.

Before moving on

How many tags should you order for the test, before an order of a hundred thousand?

The test

Before ordering a hundred thousand tags, order fifty and test them at the exact point where they will be read.

The test

The read rate in the laboratory and the read rate on a pallet of cans are different numbers. No data sheet will tell you by how much.

Note

The data sheet describes the tag; the test describes the reading point, with its metals, its liquids and the people who use it.

In a sentence

There is no best technology: there is the one that corresponds to the gesture of the person reading.
